If you’re looking for a unique change from classic cranberry sauce, then look no further! This traditional cranberry sauce substitute has a nice spicy kick from fresh jalapenos. Best of all it comes together with little effort and if you have never made fresh cranberry sauce this is a simple recipe that is perfect for the holiday season.

I admit I love fresh cranberries. I love the canned stuff, too. I used to get a kick out of hearing it suction away from the can and plop into the serving dish. But then I learned how much sugar is in that gelled goo. Before I lost 125 pounds I didn’t care. Now I do.

Depending on the brand you buy it can have around 22 grams of sugar per serving. That’s over 5 teaspoons per serving and a lot of calories!

This healthy jalapeno cranberry sauce has less sugar (14 grams per serving) and more fiber than the grocery store stuff. Plus it has a little heat and if you are watching your calorie intake and wanting to lose weight, then you know the more flavor the better.

So, I decided to make my own cranberry sauce and give it a little kick. Now you could call this cranberry jalapeno relish, cranberry jalapeno dip, or cranberry jalapeno salsa.  Whatever you call it I think you will love this spicy cranberry mixture and I bet it will become a holiday tradition.

  • Fresh Cranberries – those red berries are going to add a beautiful color not to mention tartness to your sauce.
  • Cilantro – If you aren’t a fan, you can always omit it, however, it gives this cranberry salsa a nice fresh flavor.
  • Onion – you can use white, yellow, or red onion. I would not recommend green onions.
  • Fresh Jalapenos – you can remove the white membrane and seeds for a little less heat.
  • Lime – a fresh squeeze of lime juice and a little lime zest for added zip.
  • Sugar – you can use white sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar, or monkfruit sweetener if you prefer.
  • Ginger – you can choose to use a little fresh ginger or ground ginger for a little spice.
  • Salt- just a pinch to highlight the sweetness. You can omit it if you are watching your salt intake.

FAQ’s

Can you freeze cranberry sauce?

Yes! Freezing cranberry sauce is a convenient way to extend its shelf life, making it perfect for preparing ahead or preserving leftovers.

After making it, portion it into suitable containers or resealable freezer bags. Be sure to leave some space at the top of the container or bag to accommodate expansion during freezing. Label each container with the date and type of sauce to keep track of its freshness. Place the containers in the freezer.

When ready to use, transfer the cranberry sauce to the refrigerator the night before to allow for gradual thawing. Alternatively, you can use the microwave’s defrost setting for quicker thawing.

I recommend eating the frozen cranberry sauce within a few months for optimal flavor and texture.

How far in advance can you make cranberry sauce?

Cranberry jalapeno sauce, known for its delightful sweet and spicy combination, can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for several days, making it a convenient dish for holiday preparations.

You can prepare it 3 to 4 days before your event, allowing enough time for the flavors to meld and develop. Simply store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

This make-ahead approach not only saves you time on the day of your gathering but also allows the flavors to intensify, enhancing the overall taste of the sauce.

How long does cranberry sauce last?

Cranberry sauce typically lasts for about 8 to 10 days when stored properly in the refrigerator. To maximize its shelf life, store it in an airtight container and keep it in the coldest part of your fridge.

If you notice any signs of spoilage, such as an off smell, mold, or changes in color or texture, it’s advisable to discard it. It’s worth noting that homemade cranberry sauce may have a shorter shelf life compared to commercially processed varieties. Always follow proper food safety guidelines to ensure the freshness and safety of your cranberry sauce.

What are the health benefits of cranberry sauce?

Cranberry sauce, when prepared in a health-conscious manner, like this recipe, can offer several potential health benefits. Here are some of them:

  1. Rich in Antioxidants: Cranberries are packed with antioxidants, including vitamin C, which help protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  2. Urinary Tract Health: Cranberries are well-known for their potential to promote urinary tract health. They contain compounds that may help prevent and alleviate urinary tract infections by preventing bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract walls.
  3. Heart Health: The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties of cranberries may contribute to heart health. They might help lower blood pressure and improve overall cardiovascular function.
  4. Rich in Vitamins and Nutrients: Cranberries are a good source of various vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin A, and manganese.
  5. Digestive Health: The dietary fiber in cranberries can contribute to digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and supporting a healthy gut.
  6. Weight Management: Cranberries are relatively low in calories and can be a flavorful addition to a diet focused on weight management.

It’s important to note that these benefits are associated with fresh or minimally processed cranberries. Store-bought cranberry sauce can sometimes be high in added sugars as mentioned above, so choosing homemade or low-sugar options will maximize the health benefits.

Is Cranberry Sauce Vegan?

Traditional cranberry sauce is generally vegan, as it is made from cranberries, sugar, and water. However, it’s essential to check the specific ingredients in store-bought cranberry sauce or recipes, as some variations may include additional ingredients like gelatin, which is not vegan.

This recipe is vegan and gluten-free.
