How do you make a tortilla bowl you might be wondering? It’s so easy!

I tried three different variations and I’ll share the pros and cons of each.  I used an organic whole wheat tortilla, so I’ not sure how a gluten-free tortilla would work, but you could always give it a go.

The first tortilla bowl I made was larger, so it held more delicious filling.

I generously greased the outside and bottom of a Pyrex mixing bowl and placed the tortilla over it. I gently folded a few creases where the tortilla wanted to naturally bend. This makes a really pretty design, but the tortilla needs to be somewhat pliable. You might need to microwave it for 10 seconds or so if it isn’t.

This tortilla bowl was very challenging to remove from the mixing bowl without breaking it, so that was definitely a con. I went through a couple of shells before I realized if you give it a little twist, it helps it to release. You have to be gentle with this shell.  See the tortilla shell on the left, in the back of the picture.

The second tortilla bowl was smaller, however it was very easy to remove from the bowl.

I generously greased the inside of the mixing bowl and gently placed the tortilla in it. I creased it where it naturally folded and pressed it down to make a nice “bowl” indention.  I had no problem at all removing this tortilla bowl, however it makes a smaller bowl for taco salads. That might be a good thing if you are budgeting your calories.

The third tortilla bowl was simple, however it was a lot flatter and a little more plate than bowl-like.

I generously greased a small skillet and placed the tortilla in it. Again, I creased it, but due to the skillet being larger than the mixing bowl, it really didn’t need to be creased very much. I had no problem removing this tortilla bowl, however as I said, it’s a little more plate-like than bowl, so it will hold more taco salad.

All in all, I would choose tortilla bowl 2, since it is easier to remove and still looks like a bowl.

That’s the recipe I’m sharing below. Enjoy!
