You are naked and apprehensive to move, but you gingerly step on it with eyes fixed forward. Slowly, you look downward and your brain tries to register the number. Did you lose, gain or stay the same? Joy or Frustration sweeps over you and your mood is set.

Does that sound familiar?

If so, welcome to the club. That’s how I lived my life for years. Now I’ve found freedom, but it wasn’t easy and there are still days when it is challenging. (Read my story of losing 125 pounds.)

If your weight has become your identity -you can find freedom with this healthy living devotional.

It was years ago when God helped me realize that I was worshipping the scale. I would approach it naked because I didn’t want my clothes adding any weight. Then I would step on it, read it, step off and step on again, just to make sure it was accurate. Finally, based on what it “said” I would have a “good” day or a “bad” day. I would do this day in and day out, whether I was working on weight loss or not. This habit was crushing me.

I was idolizing the scale instead of focusing on The One that truly knows my worth. Are you doing the same thing? You can turn away and rediscover your True Value.

Deuteronomy 30: 19-20 Today I ask heaven and earth to be witnesses. I am offering you life or death, blessings or curses. Now, choose life! Then you and your children may live. To choose life is to love the Lord your God, obey him and stay close to him. He is your life…

There is no life in the scale only judgement.

I believe the root of the problem is Pride. Sometimes, we are prideful if we have lost weight and find deep pleasure in our achievement.  Maybe we compare ourselves to others when we step on and determine whether our number is in range with everyone else. We feel self loathing if the number isn’t what we want and that is a form of pride as well.

If you compare yourself to others you will either feel pride or self loathing. Neither is good.  TWEET THIS!

In this scripture, you are advised to stay close to God because He is life. It is impossible to break free from mental strongholds that might be sabotaging your healthy efforts and He is the only one that can help you take them down. He is the one that can help you gain wisdom for your unique situation. He is the one that will show you your true identity.

You are His child, His creation and He loves you dearly, no matter what the scale says.

We are advised to choose life. Decide today that you are not a number, you will not let an inanimate object determine your worth. Choose life. Choose wisdom –

Proverbs 8:17 “I love those who love me; And those who diligently seek me will find me.”

Choose what is wise regarding your body and be determined to be strong and healthy no matter what the scale says. If you continue on your path to health and wellness, the number will take care of itself. Seek God and Wisdom in every choice that you make whether it is eating, drinking or exercising. Then you will find your identity in Him and not in a number.
