Happy New Year, friends! When a new year rolls around it always feels like a fresh start, doesn’t it? I’m a goal setter at heart and always have been. The problem is I can set about 20 goals at a time and then it’s hard to focus on really accomplishing anything.

I finally learned I have to be intentional with my goals.  I have to focus and narrow in, not  just say, “I want to lose weight.”  The goal has to be more intentional – I want to lose 20 lbs.

That doesn’t cut it either, though.  I want to win the lottery, but that isn’t going to happen because I don’t play. So, I have to get even more focused and decide what I’m willing to do to lose 20 lbs. I have to have an action plan. The weight isn’t going to magically disappear.

My New Year’s Resolution could be to lose 20 lbs by eating healthier.

But what does that mean? It could mean that I’m going to eat broccoli every day, in addition to pizza, burgers, shakes, etc. See what I’m getting at?  If I want to reach a challenging goal, I’m going to have to get very specific, very focused and very determined.

A resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something.

A firm decision. Done. Mind made up. Come #$!! or high water I’m going to do it.  That’s where I have to be emotionally to reach my goal. We all know how to lose weight, we need to get there emotionally.

  • Why do you want to lose weight?
  • Why do you want to be healthier?
  • What are you willing to do to reach your goal?
  • When do you want to reach it by?
  • Is that realistic?
  • Are you setting yourself up for failure?

Make your resolution a Small Bite.

Specific – Narrow in and focus – what do you want to achieve?

Motivational– Can you feel it in your gut? Are you excited about it? Is it your goal and not your mama’s?

Action – What are you going to do in order to reach your goal? Are you REALLY going to run at 5 a.m.?

Likely – Is it realistic? Are you likely to reach it? You are NOT going to lose 10 lbs in a week and keep it off. Don’t set yourself up for failure.

Let it happen – Picture yourself reaching your goal. How do you feel? You want to speak your goal, write it down, tell your goal to someone you love and trust and then let it happen.
