The Best Homemade Vegan Butter Recipe

Before I lost 125 pounds, I loved traditional butter. Now that I enjoy a plant-based diet, I swapped regular butter for dairy-free butter and never looked back.

Before I created this dairy-free buttery spread I would eat store-bought vegan butters like Earth Balance and Miyoko’s vegan butter. I enjoy commercial vegan margarine but don’t enjoy the cost. This vegan butter recipe is a good option for you if you feel the same way.

This vegan butter is fairly solid, so if you are looking for a more spreadable vegan butter be sure to allow it to set at room temperature for a few minutes before using.

The printable recipe card includes the main ingredients, quantities, step-by-step instructions, and daily values below.

  • Refined Coconut Oil  โ€“ don’t worry; it won’t have a coconut flavor if you don’t use unrefined coconut oil.
  • Soy Milk โ€“ you can use unsweetened soy milk, oat milk, almond milk, or whatever plant milk you prefer.
  • Neutral Oil โ€“ you can use canola oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil, vegetable oil, or safflower oil. I do not recommend using olive oil since it is so flavorful. You want the oil to have a light taste.
  • Vinegar – I prefer apple cider vinegar, but you can also use lemon juice.
  • Turmeric โ€“ just a tiny bit to give the butter a pale yellow color.
  • Salt โ€“ I recommend using Maldon salt for the best flavor.

โ“FAQ’s

Can you freeze vegan butter?

Yes, you can freeze vegan butter. Actually, you will need to freeze this vegan butter recipe for at least 30 minutes to allow it to firm up, and then you can transfer it to the refrigerator.

If you want to make a large batch and freeze it, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or parchment paper and then place it in an airtight container or freezer bag to prevent freezer burn. This way, it can be stored for up to six months. When youโ€™re ready to use it, simply thaw it in the refrigerator.
